The Case for Matching Sets This Summer
Bella Vita — Summer 2026
There is a particular kind of relief that comes from opening your suitcase and realizing every piece works together. That is the quiet genius of a matching set: the decision is already made. You look intentional. You packed light. You are not standing in a hotel bathroom at 7am holding a skirt up to three different tops wondering if taupe counts as neutral.
Matching sets have been having a moment for a few seasons now, and unlike a lot of trends that work better on a mood board than in real life, this one actually delivers. The reason is simple: a well-designed set gives you one outfit that functions as two or three, depending on how you style the pieces apart.
Why sets work so well for summer travel
Packing for summer is its own specific challenge. You want versatility, you want pieces that don't wrinkle into a disaster at the bottom of a bag, and you want to feel like yourself rather than someone who brought their "travel clothes." Sets solve all of this. Pack the top and the bottom, wear them together on the flight, wear them separately for the rest of the trip.
The Compania Fantastica Gingham pieces are a good example of how this works in practice. The Gingham Button-Front Shirt and Long Gingham Skirt are a complete look worn together, but the shirt works just as well open over a swimsuit, and the skirt pairs cleanly with a simple tank. That is three or four outfits from two pieces, with a print bold enough that nobody is going to forget you wore it.
Bold prints, easy silhouettes
At Bella Vita, we lean toward sets with graphic prints and relaxed cuts. The Compania Fantastica Harmony Heart Print Vest and Trousers are a good example. The print is confident but the silhouette is loose, which is the combination that actually gets worn. Same logic applies to the ICHI IHKATICO Tie Back Shirt and Trousers: a clean coordinate that works because neither piece is trying too hard.
Don't Grow Up takes a different approach. The Rain Boxy T-Shirt and Adult Skirt have an all-over print that is graphic and cheerful without being loud in the wrong way. The boxy cut on the top means the set reads as relaxed even when the print is doing something interesting.
How to wear matching sets as separates
The test of a good set is how the pieces hold up on their own. A few approaches that work with what we carry:
Pair a printed top from a set with plain trousers or denim in a neutral that picks up one of the print colors. Wear the bottoms with a solid top in white, cream, or black and let the pattern carry the outfit. Use the shirt from a set as a layer over a swimsuit or a simple slip dress. The Gingham Button-Front Shirt from Compania Fantastica was practically made for this.
Because Bella Vita tends to carry brands with consistent color palettes and graphic sensibilities, pieces from different sets often work together too. The Joolee Hydrangea Skirt and the Buttermilk Striped Tank, for instance, share enough of a design logic that mixing across brands is worth trying.
